JAMB Maths: a topic-by-topic revision guide
JAMB Maths rewards method over memory. Master number and algebra first, then geometry, trig and statistics — and practise solving, not just recognising.
JAMB Mathematics frightens a lot of candidates, but it's one of the most learnable papers there is — because maths is method, and methods can be practised until they're automatic. Here's a sensible order to revise in.
Build the foundation: number and algebra
Almost everything else leans on these. Make sure you're solid on fractions, indices, surds, logarithms, variation, and solving equations — linear, quadratic, and simultaneous. If algebra is shaky, fix that before anything else; trying to do harder topics on a weak foundation is where frustration comes from.
Then geometry and trigonometry
Angles, triangles, circles, mensuration, and basic trig ratios show up reliably. These reward drawing the diagram clearly and labelling what you know. Trigonometry in particular is pattern-based — once you've drilled the common ratios and identities, the questions start to look familiar.
Don't skip statistics and probability
Mean, median, mode, frequency tables, and simple probability are often among the most approachable marks on the paper, yet some students leave them to chance. A few focused sessions here are usually worth it.
Solve, don't just recognise
The biggest trap in maths revision is reading worked solutions, nodding along, and assuming you've learned it. You haven't — not until you can do a fresh question with a blank page. Always cover the solution and try it yourself first.
Get a method explained when you're stuck
Maths is the subject where one good explanation can unlock an entire topic. If quadratic equations or trig identities just won't click, a maths chum can show you a method that finally makes sense.
