Maths topics that always show up — and why
Some maths topics appear in nearly every exam because everything else builds on them. Here are the foundations worth mastering first, from BODMAS to algebra.
If you've ever felt maths is endless, here's some relief: a small set of topics underpins most of what exams test. Master those, and a huge amount of the subject suddenly feels connected rather than random.
The order of operations (BODMAS)
It sounds basic, but getting BODMAS wrong quietly costs marks across every other topic. Brackets, orders (powers and roots), division and multiplication, then addition and subtraction — in that order. Once this is automatic, your arithmetic stops betraying your good ideas.
Fractions, decimals and percentages
These three are really one skill in different clothes, and they appear everywhere — in money problems, statistics, ratios, and beyond. Being able to switch comfortably between them removes a surprising amount of friction from harder questions.
Algebra: the language of maths
Algebra is where maths becomes powerful, because it lets you handle unknowns. Solving equations, expanding and factorising, and substituting values are foundational. Almost every advanced topic — from coordinate geometry to physics formulae — leans on confident algebra.
Ratio, proportion and variation
Real-world maths is full of "if this, then how much of that?" Ratio and proportion answer exactly those questions, and they recur in everything from recipes to scale drawings to direct and inverse variation problems.
Build the foundation, then everything gets easier
Notice the theme: these topics are worth mastering not because they're glamorous but because everything else depends on them. If they're shaky, harder topics feel impossible; if they're solid, harder topics feel like the next logical step.
