WAEC English: a practical guide to passing well
WAEC English tests essay, comprehension, summary and oral skills. Plan your essays, read actively, and practise summary writing to turn a pass into a credit.
English Language is one of the most important subjects in WAEC — it's required for almost every course and career path. The paper is broad, but each section rewards a clear, practised approach.
Plan before you write the essay
The essay section rewards structure as much as ideas. Spend the first few minutes planning: a clear introduction, two or three well-developed points each in their own paragraph, and a tidy conclusion. Examiners reward organised, readable writing in correct English far more than long, rambling answers. Mind your tenses, punctuation, and paragraphing — they carry real marks.
Read actively for comprehension
Comprehension questions reward understanding, not speed. Read the passage carefully, then answer in your own words where asked rather than copying chunks. Pay attention to questions about the writer's attitude or the meaning of a phrase in context — those separate a pass from a credit.
Practise summary writing
Summary is a skill, and it's very learnable: read the passage, find the points the question actually asks for, and express them concisely in your own words without adding opinion. Practising a few of these each week makes a real difference, because most students under-practise this section.
Don't ignore oral English
The test of orals — sounds, stress, and intonation — has predictable patterns. A little structured practice here protects easy marks that many candidates throw away.
